When Betty Chetcuti had her first child seven years ago, she survived on other people's advice. Except, that is, when it came to co-sleeping.

"I felt there was overwhelming pressure to have children sleep in a separate bed without any justification for it," she says.

"I was in love with my little boy and just didn't want to let go, I just wanted to watch him."

Despite the anxieties that come with being a first-time mother, Ms Chetcuti, 37, followed her instinct and allowed Nicholas, now seven, to share a bed with his parents for more than a year. Her desire to do this was as much about being close to her first-born, as improving the quality of sleep for herself and Nicholas.

"I was better able to help him settle and then the sleep process was less traumatic for him," she says.

"And I was less stressed about 'what if my child is not breathing', or feeling that I really wanted to be with him."

She did the same with her second son Liam, now five, who stayed for about six months.

Both boys now sleep in their own beds, but return every now and then for a visit.


Ms Chetcuti says the benefits of co-sleeping go beyond the practicalities of being able to monitor the baby. "It's such a natural thing to do," she says. "The skin-to-skin contact and sensing that the parent is near makes them feel safer."

Ms Chetcuti, now 24 weeks pregnant with her third child, says co-sleeping also makes breastfeeding more convenient and it allows the father to become more aware of the demands of a baby while cementing a bond.
